- Most of these comments consider Opera Mini 4.0 in comparison Blazer 4.3, both on my Palm T|X.
- Positive:
- It seems faster than Blazer:
- Starting up
- Loading pages.
- This in spite of the fact that it's a Java application.
- I like it that it has an easy to use Java simulator:
- I like the greeked view and zooming in and out. They call it an overview of the page.
- The type in url function is much nicer than Blazer with the menu at the top that will paste in the current or the penultimate url.
- It keeps its place in a page when you go back.
- It has a nice synch feature which synchronizes my bookmarks on my Palm with my bookmarks on a web page I access through my private account at http://my.opera.com
- Like most Palm synching, it is bidirectional: changes at either place show up at the other place.
- I can use this feature to save urls and then post them to http://del.icio.us/mshook?setminposts=100 on a desktop or laptop.
- I can scroll not only with the scroll bar, but also directly by dragging the page up and down and left and right.
- Negative:
- Doesn't play at all with other Palm applications. Once you start it you can't access other applications.
- No cut and paste - not just between Opera and other Palm applications, but even within Opera itself.
- In the simulator the only way to move the cursor is sequentially forward and backward, so far as I can tell.
- I can't tell when it's going to use the greeked view and when it's going to try to fit everything in.
- Doesn't do animated gifs
- It crashes quite a bit requiring a restart.
- Doesn't save pages for offline viewing.
- Notes:
- You need at Java Virtual Machine. You can get one at http://www.palm.com/us/support/jvm/download.html
- I tried a previous generation of the Opera browser on my T|X about a year ago - 10/07. As I recall, I didn't use it for more than a few hours before I abandoned it. It didn't have the overview and zooming.
- Questions:
- What level of Javascript support does it have?
- Summary:
- Initially I'd say that it's nice for read-only use, not that Blazer is good at R/W, but with cut and paste it's a little better. I don't imagine I'll ever post to http://del.icio.us/mshook?setminposts=100 because I'd have to enter the whole url.
