- A conversation with Dan Chudnov about OpenURL, context-sensitive linking, and digital archiving
- Starting at 3:54
- Jon Udell
- Maybe we should start with the perspective that someone has who is on the web and runs into the funny looking thing called an OpenURL and talk about what that is, what it's doing for me and why.
- David Chudnov quote:
- The further I get into this, the more I like to frame things as really old questions just reappearing.
- The problem you're trying to solve when you run into an OpenURL is really an old problem. It's as old as research.
- That problem is to follow the history of thought in a problem space when you read somebody's article and they relate it to work that's come before. You want to be able to follow the references and see which giant's shoulders they've been standing on and verify that these people are building on the right combination of work when they're proposing a new idea or a solution to a problem. Part of that is simply verifying that their statement of the problem is accurate and they know what they're talking about and the more important progressive aspect of that is being able to verify scientific results and claims. You need to be able to follow people's references if you want to do science.
